Why do I have to verify my card?

I have been using my Apple Watch to pay with Apple Pay. So today I wanted to pay for something but I couldn't; "Card not verified. You can verify it from the Apple Watch App on your iPhone." I had no problem paying for it with my iPhone. ***?

The Apple Watch app on the iPhone tells me that my card is "Ready to verify", but I have to call my bank. I never had to call my bank when I set it up. What is this, does anybody have any idea?
